My uncle Gerald Mahaffee also was a World War One veteran, and lived in NC at the time. Attached is a picture of Gerald Mahaffee (in uniform) with his Mom, Dad, brothers and sister.
Attached is his WWI registration card. As noted, he had already (what he spells "allready") enlisted. I believe that he was in the Hospital Corps. He returned safely home and, in 1920, was living with his Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters, as per the attached 1920 census for the High Shore Township, Henrietta precinct in Rutherford County, NC.
