John Wesley Shell - Born: Sept. 14, 1892 Watauga Co., NC Died: July 25, 1970 Monmouth Co., NJ John Wesley Shell was my great uncle. He was a private with the 2nd Army, 100th Aero Squadron and was aboard the S.S. Tuscania when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat (UB-77) on Feb., 5, 1918 off the coast of Ireland When he washed ashore, he was thought to be dead and placed in a makeshift morgue. Somone later heard groaning from inside and found he was still alive. He was transported to hospital in England, where he recovered and was then reunited with his squadron. He was later promoted to the rank of Sgt. Discharged 1919
